Just for Men
Men are especially susceptible to the social stigmas associated with mood disorders, and thus far less likely to seek treatment - preferring instead to suffer quietly, or "tough it out." Taught from a young age to not express vulnerability, but rather to "man up," it can be incredibly difficult to not only admit there may be a problem, but to ask for help.
Data from The National Center for Health Statistics shows that approximately one out of every ten men struggle with anxiety or depression, but less than half of them seek treatment.
The San Diego Center for the Treatment of Mood Disorders has extensive experience helping men reach out to find proper treatment. Dr. Brown also has significant and specific experience treating men in the military community, for whom it can often be even more challenging to seek treatment. In the words of the incomparable John Wayne,
"Courage is being scared to death, and saddling up anyway."
